Review from a Virtual Tourist pen pal 5.0 out of 5 stars A gentle but exciting search
By Beausoleil I just finished "Journey Into Poland" by Janet Hartman and thoroughly enjoyed it. I am not Polish and was born into a geneology traced back into the mists of time (34 BC) but have often wondered about the many ancestors who were not included, where they came from, how they happened into the main thread and choices they made. We have had saints and sinners in our family so it’s exciting to follow someone on their very honest journey of discovery. Janet’s gentle excitement was the highlight of the book for me. She was so forgiving of faults; so understanding; so kind in her reactions that it is easy to understand why people warmed to her and helped her along in her journey. The book was a page turner for me. At each discovery, I wanted to know the next step and the reason was the author’s ability to convey her thrill of the search. If you are doing an ancestor search, there are quite a few hints and web sites offered for assistance. If you are simply interested in Poland, there is a wealth of information on the Poland most tourists never see. I remember watching and listening to broadcasts about the Solidarity Movement in Poland, and Janet truly brought it to life for me. When I was younger and listening to it, it was simply news of the day. When you read about it in the book, it is shaping the lives of real people, her people, and it becomes much more immediate. It is a peaceful but impelling memoir of a truly dedicated search for family. It is also a truly beautifully written book that I highly recommend. |
