Journey Into Poland; My Roots In Grandfather's Village
Janet Hudon Hartman
About The Author
Janet makes her home in the National Historic District of Pawtuxet Village in Warwick, R.I. where she lives in a c.1770 Colonial, the second period home she has restored with her husband.
Travel has always been compelling in the lives of Janet, her husband and three offspring. A member of the travel website, Virtual Tourist.com, she writes about her family’s explorations and where she has guided many seekers interested in her journeys to Poland.
Two books about Pawtuxet Village have been written and published by Janet. Second Nature: Blooming in Pawtuxet Village, where she collaborated with her daughter, Susan; and THE CRANSTON SIDE: Pawtuxet Village National Historic District, which describes the history and architecture of that side of the district and can be used as a walking guide.
She is a regular contributor to the local village newspaper, “The Bridge,” which she founded in 1986.
When she isn’t traveling, researching or writing, Janet is an avid gardener with her loyal Australian Shepard, Watson, by her side.

Journey Into Poland is a memoir about family and the search for my roots, but it’s more than that. I wanted to introduce you to its enchanting beauty; its friendly, obliging people; and sprinkle in some of its history one must know in order to understand the Polish character.
Americans typically have little exposure to Warsaw and Krakow, and none to the smaller villages and pure farmlands which are a world away from city life. I wanted to share that flawless simplicity which I feel is --- the real Poland, hidden from the world and often from the descendants of those daring early adventurers who crossed the ocean in life threatening conditions aboard overloaded boats.
The story of Polish immigrants doesn’t end with startling statistics or the intake center at Ellis Island. It continues for decades, and sometimes we are lucky enough to discover who we really are.
